Course Descriptions
The sixth grade general mathematics course continues the development of the skills and concepts taught at the elementary level.  Applications, problem solving, and critical thinking are integrated throughout the course.  The course will offer real-life mathematics in the areas of basic computations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, algebra, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, ratios, and data analysis including measures of center, and statistical graphs.  Technology will be integrated as a tool of instruction.

Supplies needed every class
Ø  Pencils – Students will use a pencil every day.
Ø  Yellow five subject spiral notebook
Ø  Yellow 2 pocket folder
Ø  Calculator
Ø  Loose leaf paper

Evaluation
Students will be evaluated on their performance on tests and quizzes, small group activities, individual assignments/projects, and on their attitude and behavior in class.  Their grade will consist of the following two categories:

                Assessments:
This category is made up of tests, quizzes, projects, and class work.  Assessments will count for 100% of your grade in math.

                Practice (Homework):
Homework will count for 0% for their grade, but it will determine their effort grade of 1, 2, or 3.  It will be recorded on a 0-2 scale (2 - completed, 1 - incomplete, 0 – missing) in Infinite Campus. Homework is considered to be practice work and will directly relate to tests, quizzes, and projects.  I expect each student to complete the required practice because it will greatly influence how they perform on other assessments.  Homework is used as a tool to help them practice the important knowledge, concepts, and skills that will be assessed in class.  Their effort grade will be determined as follows:

                                    80%-100% of assignments complete = 1
                                    60%-79% of assignments complete = 2
59% of less = effort grade of 3

All homework should be kept in the yellow folder after it is corrected, since it may be used on quizzes.  Homework and handouts should be cleaned out at a designated time.  It is very important to date all assignments and use the correct heading.  Assignments will be posted daily on the board.  Students are expected to copy assignments as written in their planner at the start of every class.  Assignments will be posted on my web site: www.shipleyh.weebly.com.  This resource is mainly for students looking for makeup work when absent (only homework, not in-class work will be posted on the web) and for parents.

Extra Credit
"Extra Credit" is not offered in this class as a means to improve grades.  However, various math "extra" will be made avaiable throughout the school year through competitions and for fun.

Student grades are available though inifinite campus. Should a student or their family feel that they would like to improve the student's assessed performance, please contact me so that we may discuss how we can work together to achieve this goal.

My Class Expectations
-          You are in your seat with your math folder and completed homework on your desk when the bell rings.
-          You have a pencil, math folder, math book, an eraser, calculator, and a grading pen for class.
-          You are respectful to all class members and work cooperatively with your group.
-          You follow directions the first time asked and raise your hand if you have a question.
-          Give your best effort each class and work to be successful math student.

Extra Help
All students are welcome to see me before school or during lunch for any extra help on math.  I ask that students let me know ahead of time so I can plan on meeting with them.

Let’s work together to make this school year success!

Students: Do your best to succeed in math by completing your homework, work together, and asking questions.

Parents: Ask your child about math class and what they are working on.  Check over their homework occasionally and ask them to show you their math folder.  Feel free to contact me anytime to discuss how we can work together to help your child succeed.

Teacher: I will gear my lessons to help each student achieve his/her goals and together we’ll watch the students grow and succeed in math.

I have read and understand the rules/procedures of this class and agree to work hard to achieve my goals and succeed in Mrs. Shipley’s math class.
